My whole life fit neatly into two rolling suitcases that bumped along the brown tile. There was some message hidden beneath the symbolism, but I didn’t want to know what it was. I worked hard for the entirety of the three-hour train ride to not think about anything at all. I tried listening to my self-help audiobook, but rage-quit when they got to the part about the pitfalls of people-pleasing.
“At least it can’t get any worse,” I whispered to myself. But another helpful little voice in my brain quickly reminded me that it had only been twenty-four hours.
Outside, the salty air did more to transport me to a different place and time than the train had. I took in a deep breath, trying to decide if being home healed my soul or added salt to my wounds.
